What is NatHERS?
The Nationwide House Energy Rating Scheme (NatHERS) is mandatory in Australia and determines the energy rating for new homes and renovations. Under NatHERS, every home is assessed by its thermal performance out of a score of 10. It’s required that all homes have a minimum 7-star rating, the higher the rating is the more comfortable your living conditions will be.
What Does a 7-star Rating Mean?
A 7 star rating means your home is liveable under the NatHERS scheme. The rating is based on your thermal performance, which assesses how efficiently your home uses and stores energy for heating and cooling. With a 7-star rating, your home will be cheaper to heat and cool throughout the year and better withstand harsh weather conditions.
This can help you save hundreds of dollars on your energy bills and support the government’s long-term policy regarding a net zero emissions future by 2050.
How Important is it to Have a Good Orientation to Achieve 7-Star Standards?
Firstly, “Good Orientation” refers to the position of your home about the Sun’s path. While it is not mandatory to have good orientation, it can be beneficial in achieving a 7-star thermal rating.
The key to achieving a 7-star rating lies in the quality of your windows and doors. We offer various designs of uPVC windows and doors crafted using Aluplast technology.
This technology already meets the minimum 7-star requirements set by NatHERS. If you’re unsure if your windows and doors meet the new standards, contact us now to review their quality.
What is a uPVC door?
A uPVC door is a door made from unplasticised polyvinyl chloride, a highly durable, low-maintenance material that offers excellent thermal insulation, noise reduction and security. Unlike timber, uPVC won’t rot, warp or corrode, and unlike aluminium, it won’t conduct heat or cold, making it a smart, long-lasting choice for Australian homes. At Vue Windows, our uPVC doors are available in a range of styles including sliding, bi-fold, Smart Slide and entry and French doors, all built using premium Aluplast profiles.
Are uPVC doors secure?
Yes – uPVC doors are an excellent choice for home security. Our doors are fitted with multi-point locking systems that secure the door at several points along the frame simultaneously, making them significantly more resistant to forced entry than a standard single-point lock. The uPVC frame itself is also reinforced, adding further structural strength. For more on the security benefits of uPVC, read our guide on how secure uPVC windows are.
How long do uPVC doors last?
Quality uPVC doors typically last between 25 and 35 years when properly installed and maintained. The uPVC frame is extremely durable and will generally outlast the hardware, which can be serviced or replaced independently if needed. The Aluplast profiles we use at Vue Windows are engineered for exactly this kind of long-term performance. For a full breakdown, read our guide: How Long Do uPVC Windows Last?
How do I clean a uPVC door?
Keeping your uPVC door looking its best is straightforward. Wipe down the frame with warm soapy water and a soft cloth, avoid abrasive cleaners, solvents or bleach-based products, which can damage the surface over time. For the tracks, rollers and hardware, a damp cloth followed by a light application of silicone spray will keep everything operating smoothly. One of the genuine advantages of uPVC doors is how little upkeep they require compared to timber or aluminium alternatives.
What are uPVC doors made of?
uPVC doors are made from unplasticised polyvinyl chloride, a rigid form of PVC that contains no plasticisers, making it exceptionally strong and stable over time. The frames are hollow but reinforced with internal chambers that add structural strength and contribute to the door’s thermal and acoustic performance. Our doors are manufactured using Aluplast uPVC profiles, a premium European system engineered for durability, energy efficiency and long-term performance in the Australian climate.
Are uPVC doors better than composite?
Both uPVC and composite doors have their merits, but for most Melbourne homeowners, uPVC is the stronger all-round choice. uPVC doors offer excellent thermal insulation, require very little maintenance and are built to last decades without rotting, warping or corroding. Paired with double glazing, they deliver a level of energy efficiency and acoustic performance that’s hard to match. For a detailed breakdown of how the two compare, read our full guide: uPVC vs composite doors.
